Psychometric Testing
When recruiting graduates, everyone wants the best. Many organisations are now looking to psychometric testing to assist them to identify the candidates who have the highest predicted capacity to perform. To this end – psychometric testing can be a valid and reliable predictor of performance.

Psychometric tests, by virtue of their nature, require qualified, experienced, and trained psychologists to undertake the development and the assessment of the testing instrument. There are many organisations in Australia and New Zealand that market the ability to deliver these types of services but caution should be exercised when selecting a provider.

Always ensure that the testing company has a demonstrated experience in the market and that the instruments they are recommending can satisfy the most rigorous standards of reliability and validity.

Reliability can be indicated by a number and means that the test results are accurate, reproducible, and it discriminates effectively between more and less able candidates.

Validity is the ability to demonstrate that a test measures what it aims to test. For example, does a test of critical thinking actually measure this aspect of a person’s thinking?

Your candidates test results will nearly always be measured against a benchmark or a sample population – make sure your tests are assessed against Australian population samples of high performers or graduates (not generalist or average performers).

If your organisation is making an investment in testing – make certain that you utilise the test results to their fullest capacity. For example, the results will not only help you to generate an order of merit, they can also assist your manages to:
  • Better understand how to manage a graduate once employed
  • Design elements of your graduate development program by identifying skill deficiencies
  • Provide a benchmark of your high performers
  • Enable a comparison between previous programs
  • Assess the marketing effectiveness of your campaign

Psychometric testing is often misunderstood by many organisations who end up testing for the sake of testing – this increases your program costs and adds no value to your recruitment and selection process.
